ReviewsIn this latest entry in Sheilah Lukins’ early chapter book series, about Errol’s ongoing exploits, our feisty and kind-hearted hero is as intrepid as ever. The chapters and short and action-packed, perfect for holding the attention of young readers Errol, a mouse, and Gus, a dog, give us a nice surprise off the bat when they become friends. That setup takes Errol, who has proven himself the adventurous kind in previous books, all the way to Twilingate on a dog’s back. Errol is as big-hearted as he is daring, and when hear’s that Gus wants to meet his father, he vows to help, searching everywhere with nothing to guide him but Gus’s description. As our reviewer Lisa Doucet says, “our feisty and kindhearted hero is as intrepid as ever. The chapters are short and action-packed, perfect for holding the attention of young readers... The plot is brisk and fast-paced with just the right amount of danger mixed in for good measure... Together, the text and illustrations tell a delightful tale that emergent readers will savour.” In the end, it is Errol’s big heart that carries all his adventures, his innate desire to do good that will have young readers cheering for him. The province’s most intrepid mouse is back for a third adventure. This time he’s traveling from Beachy Cove to Twillingate with his unlikely pal Gus (unlikely because Gus is a dog). Errol discovers that Gus has never met his father and decides to help out. Excitement, adventure and some hilarity ensue. Errol makes new mouse friends, discovers icebergs and survives a few narrow escapes. There’s even some romance…. Hopefully, Lukins plans to bring us more of Errol’s new friend Olivia in a future instalment, as young mouse romance is much sweeter than I ever imagined. Jean Graham -The Northeast Avalon Times |
